There’s another controversy dogging Québécois pop superstar Céline Dion. For months, people have been debating whether La Dion has gone too far with her outrageous fashion statements. Now some are wondering if her close friend and stylist Pepe Muñoz is controlling her career. It all started with a column in the New York Post-owned celebrity gossip site PageSix.com, which quoted the usual unnamed insider who alleged that Muñoz was exerting way too much influence over her life and career.“Pepe is like her boy toy who is really trying to take over,” the anonymous source told Page Six. “He’s isolating her and people are feeling it. She’s in love with this guy and listens to everything he’s saying. People go to him when they have questions. He’s fully taken over. The only people around her now (are) Pepe, the hairdresser and the stylist.”A few days later, Dion’s official Instagram account published a letter from several members of her entourage, who denied there were any issues with Muñoz.“As the real members of Céline’s ‘inner circle’, we are saddened and disappointed by an untruthful story that surfaced in the media. … These ‘sources’ have nothing better to do than to spread untrue gossip. Don’t let it get you down … and keep up the great work. We love you!”The members of the entourage only signed their first names on the Instagram letter.
Singer Céline Dion leaves the Givenchy office on Avenue George V in Paris with Pepe Munoz in January 2019.
In the summer of 2017, when Muñoz was performing an erotic pas de deux with Dion nightly on stage during her European tour, rumours first surfaced that they were a romantic item. But both have denied it and Muñoz has said he is gay. They say they’re best friends. Is there anything to the rumours? Impossible to say at this point. The one thing we do know is that Muñoz arrived recently in Montreal ahead of Dion and that they’re now both in town. And he is climbing the ladder in the Dion corporation, moving from dancing in one song to working as a stylist with the pop diva. The Page Six piece suggests it was because of his influence that Law Roach, the American fashion designer credited with creating Dion’s wild new look, was shown the door.So certainly Muñoz is a close confidante of Dion and is having an impact on the choices she’s making. But has she really signed over control to him? Kind of hard to imagine. And how strange would that be if it were true? She spent decades having her career directed and micromanaged by one man, her longtime manager and husband, René Angélil. And has she now entered into a similar business relationship with Muñoz? If it’s true, I think we need to send for Dr. Freud right away. The reason it’s hard to believe is because all evidence points to the idea that she has been taking back control of what she does since Angélil died at the beginning of 2016. But where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire, and maybe this story means that there are folks close to Dion who are not crazy about how tight she is with Muñoz.What it also underlines is how her management team has changed since the death of Angélil. He ran a well-oiled machine and he had hoped that would continue when he passed the reins to his old friend Aldo Giampaolo. But Giampaolo parted company with Dion in 2017 and, by all accounts, since then Dion has been making many of those big decisions herself, with input from her management entourage, notably including Dave Platel, who was part of the Dion entourage way back in the day when her English career was just taking off. Many were surprised by the Dion team’s post on Instagram.“I find it odd that this is being addressed so publicly,” wrote one fan.Related
“It’s really unprofessional to post something like that on Céline’s official account. Maybe she should get proper management again after all,” wrote another.“Could we please move on and focus on the tour (and on the album) now?’ wrote another, speaking for many.It does seem strange that her official Instagram would focus on rumours about Muñoz’s influence just as she is set to embark on her first North American tour in a decade and launch a new English-language album. There are whispers from some who work with the Dion camp that in the post-Angélil era, it’s tougher to get a quick straight answer about what their plans are.I’ve said that what we’re witnessing is the emancipation of Céline and so maybe it’s not entirely surprising that she is going to hit a few speed bumps along the firstname.lastname@example.org/brendanshowbiz
